10. China
I've always been interested in Chinese culture, ever since I was little, because of my obsession with Mulan. I also had a friend as a kid who was adopted from China and brought back to the states. Those two things really made me pursure learning about the culture and in elementary school I knew a ton of stuff about Chinese New Year and the traditions they had. My aunt even gave me an authentic kimono that she got from a friend who visited China. I don't fit in it anymore but I love it. If and when I get to go to China I really want to try a lot of food. I know it's different from the Americanized Chinese food that I'm used to but I'm interested in what authentic Chinese food is actually like. I also have a dream to see the Great Wall, which I took an imense interest in when I was about 11 after learning about it in my history class. China is definitely a dream trip of mine that I hope to get to one day, maybe even in the near future.
9. Germany
Germany is a trip I'm actually considering doing pretty soon, but one I never thought about a lot until last year. A lot of kids in my school went to Germany on a trip for AP German and from seeing the pictures and hearing stories it sounds like there's a lot more interesting stuff to see there than I originally thought. There was also a German exchange student at my school that I got to talk to a few times, and even though she really loved living in America she had a lot of great things to say about her home country. I learned that what they learn about World War II is very different from what we learn here and I think it would be really interesting to see what's different there. Maybe I'll even learn some things that we don't really learn about here in the US. Germany would also be a good learning trip which is something I'm always looking for.8. England
If I made this list when I was 15, then England would have been #1, but growing up a little bit I learned there's a lot more to see in the world than just England. Even though it's not that high up on my list I still would really love to see England. First, being the theater nerd that I am, I want to see everything Shakespeare oriented. I'm actually considering studying abroad there, but that's beside the point. I, of course, want to see Big Ben, The Tower of London, and all the castles but I think the biggest thing on my list would be Stonehenge. I'm super obsessed with conspiracy theories and natural happenings that don't make sense. I'm also pretty interested in the idea of aliens or ancient life forms that we have no record of, and the mystery of all of it fascinates me. So because of Stonehenge, the film locations of The Princess Bride and my love for tea, England is going on my list.
7. Australia
I don't know if I just watched H2O and Kangaroo Jack too much as a kid but I really want to go to Australia. I normally prefer colder climates, and try to find places where it's likely to snow if I visit at the right time, but Australia is an exception. There are so many cool animals and the nature of Australia is just so different from New Jersey that I'm just dying to see it. I also read this article recently about the history of Australia and it's one of the most interesting things I've ever read. Australia was just an island where England put convicts beause their jails were too full and it turned into it's own independent country. That with the food and animals and tons of opportunities to go on safari adventures, I want to go to Australia.
6. Greece
Greece is actually a trip I'm going to start planning soon, I think. Thanks again to Disney, Hercules inspired me to start looking into Greek mythology. I also had to read the play Medea in school and thought the concept of writing plays to teach people life lessons is interesting because a lot of historic plays were mostly for entertainment with a vague lesson in the underlying message. The Greeks made their points pretty obvious though. Regardless, I started to read about Anciet Greece and all the mythology and it made me want to see this place for myself. There's also the statue of Zues which is one of the wonders of the world and I have a small goal in my head to try to see them, or where they would be in this case, since the statue doesnt actually exist anymore.
5. Italy
This one is kind of obvious since pretty much everyone in the world wants to go to Italy. My family is also really Italian and we recently found out which part of Italy we're from and I actually think we found out which town out ancestors are from, and if I can figure that out I would really love to see that. I find heritage and seeing where I came from fascinating. My boyfriend, Joey, is also from a super Italian family and he actually went to Italy for a month when he was 14 and he said it was the best experience of his life and he really wants to go back. I think of all the things in Italy that I want to see, I want to see Venice the most. My generation is probably going to be one of the last to be able to see Venice fully, since its actually sinking underwater. In this aritcle it shows all the statistics about how fast it's actually sinking. It seems like we have a while before it's fully underwater, but I would still like to go as soon as possible.
4. Romania
I have been dreaming of going to Romania since I was about 7. Not only have I been completely obsessed with vampires my entire life, but I had a neighbor and best friend growing up that was from Romania. His name is Andrei and his parents moved here after he was born. When we met Andrei after they moved into a house across the street, none of them spoke very much English, and his grandmother actually didn't speak any at all. Growing up with such an attachment to this culture made me want to go even more. I actually spent a good amount of time with his parents because they were violinists and so am I, and when I first picked it up they taught me some things. They're actually the Philadelphia String Quartet. The food they made was amazing and then everything I've read/watched on my own has really inspired me to go to Romania. I'm also always up for a ghost trip and there's a ton of haunted places there, my biggest goal being Dracula's Castle.
3. Greenland/Iceland
I couldn't chose which of these two I would rather visit more so they got put in the same number. I would actually most likely hit both these countries in one trip anyway. Again, with the history, I think vikings are the coolest group of people to learn about. The way they thought and acted and their philosophy on life is very straight forward and it made a lot of sense. They were/are a super practical group of people. They were smart about a lot of things and modern society could probably learn a lot from vikings. The scenery in these countries is really why I want to visit, it's just too beautiful for me to not want to go there.
2. Ireland
This one was probably pretty obvious, too. Everyone wants to go to Ireland and it's pretty easy to see why. The country is gorgeous and it's so different from what I get to see here, between New York City and Philadelphia. Also, there's the heritage aspect of it. My dad's side of the family is mostly Irish and most of them have actually gone back to see Ireland and I think met some of our cousins or something. My dad was actually in Ireland when he found out my mom was pregnant and I think that's kind of cute and I want to visit where he was when he found out about me. Just seeing all the pictures from my family going there, I've wanted to see it all for myself. There's also a lot of witch history and culture that originated in Ireland that I want to learn more about. There's just no reason to not want to see Ireland.
1. France
Wanting to go to France is probably the biggest cliche in the world but I don't care. There is just so much to see in France and everything I seriously love is French. I'm super obsessed with Beauty and the Beast so of course France is a must for that. Also, as a theater nerd, and having just worked on the show, Les Miserables and a huge reason for me wanting to go to France. Working on Les Mis I've fallen in love with the show and become obsessed with it. I'm actually going to see it on broadway this weekend which is closing weekend. I love French food and there are so many landmarks I want to see. Obviously the Eiffel Tower is one of them but there's also the Catacombs, the French Riviera, and the Palace of Versaille. I also really want to learn how to speak French and once I do learn, I think this would be a really great trip to go on. So France is #1 on my list, and I would probably never want to leave.
So, that is my top 10 list. Of course, there's a million more places like Japan and Spain and South Africa that I want to visit but for now, these are the top 10 that I'm trying to see in my life time and probably the trips that I'm going to make longer than others. Hopefully someone found this interesting or something and if anyone is interested I think I'm going to eventually make a Top 5 American destinations since there are a few states and cities that I really want to visit in my home country.
